Add aligned work items, child objectives, and linked items to objectives

This article describes the updated objective details panel. For information about the legacy objectives details panel, click here.

After you create an objective, you can add internal and external objects that are related to your objective in the aligned work items, child objectives, and linked items sections.

Topics in this article:

Add aligned work items

Use the epics, capabilities, features, dependencies, risks, and impediments sections to add or associate these types of items to the objective. The sections that display depend on the objective mappings set in portfolio settings. Objectives should be tied to epics or features to display on roadmaps.

More about the aligned work items sections

Epics, capabilities, and feature sections
The Epics, Capabilities, or Features section displays depending on the objective mappings set in portfolio settings.

You can associate an existing epic, capability, or feature with the objective by clicking the plus (+) sign in the upper-right of the section.
Note: When searching for existing items by name to add to an objective, only items you have access to will be available.

Dependencies, risks, and impediments sections
The Dependencies, Risks, and Impediments section(s) display based on what’s configured in your portfolio settings. Each section displays any respective dependencies, risks, and impediments directly associated with the objective.

Optionally, you also can view related dependencies, risks, and/or impediments (dependencies, risks, and impediments tied to work items linked to your objectives and their children, but not directly associated with the objective) if it’s been configured in your portfolio settings.

You can associate an existing impediment with the objective by selecting the plus (+) sign in the upper-right of the section.
Note: When searching for existing items by name to add to an objective, only items you have access to will be available.

Add child objectives

Child objectives section.png

The Child objectives section displays a list of lower-tier objectives that have the currently-viewed objective assigned as their parent objective, as well as the child objectives’ objective scores. You can add an existing objective as a child objective by selecting the plus (+) sign in the upper-right of the section.

When adding existing objectives as child objectives, only objectives that are assigned to teams within the same portfolio as the currently viewed objective are available. Additionally, only objectives in the tier directly below the currently viewed objective’s tier can be selected. For example, on a program objective, only team objectives may be added as child objectives.
