Connect to Enterprise Insights with Microsoft Entra authentication

This article explains how to connect Azure Data Studio, SQL Server Management Studio, and Power BI to Enterprise Insights (EI) with Microsoft Entra authentication. For information on connecting Tableau to EI using Microsoft Entra, see Tableau's help documentation.

Requirements

Before attempting to connect to Enterprise Insights with Microsoft Entra authentication, you'll need the following:

  • Confirmation by Atlassian that your network IP addresses have been allowlisted for accessing your Enterprise Insights instance.
  • Confirmation by Atlassian that your Enterprise Insights instance has been set up to authenticate with Microsoft Entra.
  • Your Enterprise Insights server address and database name.

Azure Data Studio

To connect Azure Data Studio to your Enterprise Insights instance:

  1. On the Azure Data Studio Welcome screen, select Create a connection.

  2. From the Connection Details window, select or enter the following values:
    1. In the Connection type dropdown, select Microsoft SQL Server.
    2. Select the Parameters radio button.
    3. In the Server field, enter the address of your Enterprise Insights instance.
    4. In the Authentication type dropdown, select Microsoft Entra ID - Universal with MFA support.

    5. In the Account dropdown, select Add an account...
      1. A browser tab opens to sign in or select your Microsoft Entra account. Log into your Microsoft Entra account. Screens may vary, depending on your single sign-on (SSO) or multi-factor authentication (MFA) provider.

      2. After successful log in, a confirmation page displays stating that your account was added to Azure Data Studio.

    6. In the Database field, enter your Enterprise Insights database name.
    7. Select the Advanced... button. A new window displays.
      1. Set the Encrypt dropdown to True.
      2. Select the OK button.

  3. Select the Connect button at the bottom of the Connection Details window.

SQL Server Management Studio

To connect SQL Server Management Studio to your Enterprise Insights instance:

  1. Select File > Connect Object Explorer.

  2. From the Connect to Server window, select or enter the following values:

    1. In the Server type dropdown, select Database Engine.
    2. In the Server name field, enter the address of your Enterprise Insights instance.
    3. In the Authentication dropdown, select Microsoft Entra MFA.
    4. In the Username field, enter your Microsoft Entra account username.

    5. Select the Options >> button. Additional tabs display in the window.
      1. Select the Connection Properties tab.
      2. In the Connect to database field, enter the name of your Enterprise Insights database.
      3. Select the Encrypt connection checkbox.

  3. Select the Connect button at the bottom of the window. You'll be redirected to your SSO or MFA provider to enter your login credentials. 

Power BI Desktop

To connect Power BI Desktop to your Enterprise Insights instance:

  1. From the Home ribbon, select SQL Server.

  2. From the SQL Server database window, select or enter the following values:

    1. In the Server field, enter the address of your Enterprise Insights instance.
    2. In the Database (optional) field, enter the name of your Enterprise Insights database.

  3. Select OK.
  4. Select Microsoft Account on the left side of the window, then select Sign in. A pop-up window displays.

  5. Enter your Microsoft Entra account username in the Sign in field.

  6. Select the Next button. You'll be redirected to your SSO or MFA provider to enter your login credentials. 
  7. After successful authentication, you'll be returned to the SQL Server Database window. Select the Connect button.

Troubleshooting

If you're having trouble connecting to Enterprise Insights with your business intelligence tools, check the following with your network team and Jira Align admin:

  • Correct IP addresses from your corporate network are allowlisted with Enterprise Insights.
  • Correct Microsoft Entra account usernames were sent to Atlassian support through the EI Connectivity Questionnaire.
  • Port 1433 is open to outbound traffic on your corporate network. 
  • Ensure you've entered the correct Enterprise Insights instance address and database name.
