Risk ROAM report

The risk ROAM report provides you with the ability to view and manage all risks for a specified program and program increment, organized by ROAM statuses. Three charts are also available at the bottom of the page: Open vs. closed, risk of occurrence, and impact of occurrence.

Agile coaches, program/product managers, release train engineers, and other roles focused on leading or facilitating a program can use the report to organize risk management for an upcoming program increment (PI). A risk ROAM categorization activity can be performed as part of PI planning, and the report can be revisited when tracking an in progress PI

To navigate to this report:

  1. Select Programs in the top navigation bar and select the program you want to view information about.
  2. On the sidebar, select Reports in the list of options.
  3. Select Risk ROAM; the report displays.

The report can also be accessed from the More Actions button found at the top of the risks grid page.

Filters

You can filter which risks display on the report with the following options:

  • Relationship: Display only risks related to themes, epics, features, or program increments. This matches the Relationship field set on a risk’s details panel.
    • When selected, an additional filter will be displayed with the same name as the work item or program increment. Use this additional filter to display only risks associated with a specific theme, epic, feature, or PI.
  • Risk of occurrence: Display only risks with a Critical, High, Medium, or Low setting in the risk’s Occurrence field.
  • Impact of occurrence: Display only risks with a Critical, High, Medium, or Low setting in the risk’s Impact field.

Display charts

You can control which charts display on the page by switching on the toggle for each chart.

Use the report to manage risks

The report displays risks as cards, organized into vertical columns. Each column represents a ROAM status:

  • Resolved: The risk has been addressed and is no longer a concern.
  • Owned: Someone on the team is taking responsibility for the risk and will ensure it does not impact the program increment.
  • Accepted: Program leadership accepts that the risk may be unavoidable, and is comfortable moving forward with the program increment.
  • Mitigated: The team has a plan to remedy any potential impacts of the risk.

Each card supports the following actions:

  • Hover over a profile image to see the name and title of the risk’s owner.
  • Hover over a name to see the risk’s description.
  • Select a name to open that risk’s details panel.

Drag-and-drop

Drag a card from one column to another to change a risk’s ROAM status. Note that if you move a card to a resolved or mitigated status, you’ll be asked to complete an additional field.

Drag a card vertically within a column to change the visual order of cards.

Card menus

Select the three dot () menu at the right of any card to access its menu. From there, you can change the vertical position of a risk within a column. You can also choose a new ROAM status from the menu, which will move the card into the specified column.

You can also use the Tab key on your keyboard to highlight card menus, and then use Enter or Spacebar keys to open the menu. Use Tab to navigate within a menu, and then Enter or Spacebar to make a selection.

Resolved and mitigated statuses

If you move a card to a Resolved or Mitigated status, a modal will display, asking you to complete the risk’s Resolution status or Mitigation fields. These fields are required on risks when making these changes.

If you move a card out of the Resolved or Mitigated statuses, past entries made in the Resolution status or Mitigation fields will be retained in the risk’s details panel. Moving a card back into resolved or mitigated will re-issue the modal with a blank field. If you want to use a past resolution status or mitigation in this scenario, open the risk’s details panel first, then copy the contents of the field.

Note: Moving a card into the Resolved status will set the risk to Closed. Moving a card out of resolved will set the risk back to Open.

Export a screenshot

Select the Export button at the top of the page to download a .png image of the report. This image export is useful for sharing risk status outside of Jira Align or displaying risks on a monitor during program increment planning activities and readouts.

Interpret the charts

Three charts are available at the bottom of the report. These charts highlight the number of risks that are designated with various statuses. All charts have the following controls:

  • Hover over a specific color on the chart to see the percentage of risks with that status.
  • Hover over an entry in the chart’s legend to highlight a specific status.
  • Select an entry in the chart’s legend to make that status hidden or visible.

Open vs. closed

Displays the number of risks with an Open or Closed setting in the risk's Status field.

Risk of occurrence

Displays the number of risks with a Critical, High, Medium, or Low setting in the risk’s Occurrence field.

Risk of impact

Displays the number of risks with a Critical, High, Medium, or Low setting in the risk’s Impact field.

Risk limits

For performance reasons, the risk ROAM report is limited to 200 risks for a program and program increment. If your program contains more than 200 risks planned for the same program increment, only the first 200 risks will be displayed. With this many risks in a single timebox for a team-of-teams, you may want to consider how risks are created within your organization, break down your team hierarchy into smaller programs, or evaluate if your program increment is set for a long period of time, instead of the recommended 3-6 months.

Should you still need more than 200 risks for a program and program increment combination, please consider filing a feature request with Atlassian Support.
