Visualize roadmaps in program increment view

After you create your backlog hierarchy, prioritize and estimate the backlog items, it is a good idea to visualize your work with roadmaps. A roadmap is a great visual tool that shows your organizational plans. To access the roadmaps, follow the Navigate to Roadmaps procedure.

The roadmaps have three views: Work, Program Increment, and Release Vehicle. The Program Increment view shows all cards within the selected portfolio and PI. If you select one PI, you will see only one card. If you select a date range, you will see all PI cards within that date range.

This view offers a quick idea of how the PI is progressing, when it ends, or when it is supposed to be commercialized, it also gives the actual and estimate costs. Mostly the higher level of executives will benefit from the Program Increment view, for example, here they can immediately see the highlighted items, which are the most important items in the PI.

The default view is the current PI defined by your global configuration.

Prerequisites

1. PI must exist in the system and be tied to a program.
2. Sprints must be created and tied to a PI.
3. Epics, capabilities, and features must be created and tied to a program.

PI card

On the PI's card, you can view the percent complete of the PI, which is based on completed or accepted rolled up effort points divided by total possible rolled up effort points. The background color of the progress bar is based on the values defined for the In Progress, Completed, and Not Started states set in the user preferences.

By default, cards show finish date and commercialization date, but you can select what dates to show on your PI card. Additionally, you can turn on or off your view settings to customize what you see on the PI card. To do this, click View Configuration on the toolbar, and then select what content to display:

• Show photo
• Select date: internal date, external date, or PI date only
• Show cost and value
• Show description
• Show highlights by object: themes, epics, and features
• Show objectives
• Show completed PIs

Estimate and actual dates show accurate cost metrics for the selected PI. If financial data is not available for this PI or there is no financial data tied to your epics, the cost metrics will be undefined. 

• Budget: Displays the amount of funding designated for the PI, entered in the PI Funding field on the PI’s Details panel.
• Estimated Spend: The sum of all Estimated Spend values from work items planned for the PI. Estimated Spend is calculated by multiplying a feature's estimate by the current Program Spend per Point. 
• Accepted Spend: The sum of all Accepted Spend values from accepted stories planned for the PI. Accepted Spend is calculated by multiplying an accepted story's effort points estimate by the Team Spend per Point value from the sprint the story was accepted in. 

You can view the team and object metrics for your PIs to get a sense of how much work is being done and how many teams are working on a specific PI. The total counts of the following items are available at the bottom of every PI card:

• Work: stories, total story points, accepted story points, and defects
• Teams: portfolio, program, and agile teams

Timeline scale

A timeline provides the context of when PIs are scheduled to be delivered according to their end date. The PIs have a visual linkage to the timeline with a diamond icon, indicating their end date. When pointing to a card, you can only view the line tied to that card. When pointing to a diamond icon, you can only view the line or lines that relate to that diamond with a tooltip with the exact date. Diamond icons with more than one PI assigned to one date show the total number of PIs. For example, if you have three PIs assigned to one date, the diamond icon displays 3 and lines come together.

Details panel

Click Details on a PI card for the details panel to slide out. The details panel shows all information relative to the PI, including a list of themes, epics, features, and objectives. To add one of those objects, click Add next to the plus sign. You can edit the necessary objects on this panel.

Additionally, you can highlight key objects, such as objectives, themes, epics, and features coming in the PIs to see a high-level view of the value added by the PI. Click the object to highlight it or remove the highlight from it.
