Plan by quadrant

About this report

The Plan by Quadrant report displays epics and their child features, in the form of color-coded cards, plotted on a quadrant chart that measures effort and value. The report is generated by selecting a target program and PI from the drop-down menus on the top-left of the page.

Important: To have this report enabled, you need to contact Jira Align support.

The four quadrants represent the following:

  • Quadrant 1: High Value/ Low Effort
  • Quadrant 2: High Value/ High Effort
  • Quadrant 3: Low Value/ Low Effort
  • Quadrant 4: Low Value/ High Effort

The card colors represent the functional areas assigned to each feature; each functional area is assigned a color at the time of creation.

On the right of the page is a series of boxes representing feature states; use these boxes to update the state of a feature by dragging and dropping a feature card into the desired state box. For example, dragging and dropping a feature card into the In Progress box will automatically update the associated feature to an In Progress state.

Prerequisites

  1. Program must exist in the system.
  2. PI must exist in the system and be tied to a program.
  3. Epics must exist in the system and be tied to primary program; the Quadrant parameter must be filled out for each epic via its Details panel.
  4. Features must exist in the system and be tied to epics (and optionally, functional areas; required for color coding).
  5. For the cards to be color coded, functional areas must exist in the system and assigned a report color.

How are report values calculated?

  • Quadrants are assigned to epics (and inherited by an epic's child features) via the Quadrant parameter on an epic's Details panel.
  • Card color is defined by the Report Color assigned to each functional area; functional areas can be created by clicking the green + icon next to the Functional Area parameter on a feature's Details panel.

How to interpret this report

This report serves as a decision-making tool, to identify epics and features with high value and low effort. Look in quadrant 1 for cards--these represent epics and their child features that are low effort and offer a high value. Cards in quadrant 2 also have a high value, but will require a higher effort.
